CFP: A Rational Choice Perspective on the Ancient World

For more than 20 years economists have been applying rational choice theory in order to understand the institutions of ancient Greece and Rome and have published a considerable number of stimulating articles (e. g., on the origin of the polis, the emergence of democracy, the granting of rights to women, the system of revenue production). Nevertheless, ancient historians have barely taken notice of their research, let alone adopted their approach. On the other hand, they have recently been intensively investigating the impact of institutions on the performance of the ancient economy and have moreover been traditionally focusing on institutions.

The projected volume aims to unite contributions by economists and ancient historians. It intends to attract increased attention to the research pursued by economists and to offer an incentive for ancient historians to apply economic methods.

The tentative deadline for submissions is December 31, 2012.
