The Professional Matters Division is charged with overseeing the social, ethical, and professional contexts of the discipline of Classics. Its goal is the promotion of equity in all aspects of the profession. It is headed by the Vice President for Professional Matters and includes the Professional Matters Committee, the Subcommittee on Professional Ethics, the Committee on Placement, the Committee on the Status of Women and Minority Groups (CSWMG), and the Classics Advisory Service, which is a service to help college and university teachers maintain and strengthen their programs in Classics and maintains its own web page.
Electronic Publication and the Classics Profession
In order to begin dialogue on this topic among classicists, the division sponsored a panel at the 2004 Annual Meeting. The papers from this panel (which will open in a new window) are now online.
The division supervises all data collection for the APA. The reporting schedule of the CSWMG has recently been changed to one report per year analyzing three years of data on faculty and curricula, placement, or journals, starting in 2005 with a report on placement from 2001-2004. Annual surveys will continue to be sent to journals and placement candidates, and the Joint Committee on Placement will report on the status of the job market every year. Advice for Job Candidates
The Joint Committee on Placement has prepared a Checklist of Advice for Job Candidates that should be consulted by all those seeking academic positions in classics or classical archaeology (opens in a new window).
Council of Graduate Schools' April 15 Deadline
The APA Statement of Professional Ethics specifically affirms this CGS policy, and the Subcommittee on Professional Ethics reminds Classics graduate programs in the United States that they should not require or even suggest an acceptance deadline before April 15. Students should also strictly comply with the provisions of the CGS resolution and promptly notify other institutions when they have accepted an offer from a graduate program. The Subcommittee confirms that it will treat very seriously allegations that the policy has been violated by either graduate programs or graduate students.
Adjunct and Part-Time Faculty
The APA is a member of the Coalition on the Academic Workforce, a group of higher education and disciplinary associations concerned about the dramatic increase in the use of "contingent," or non-tenure-track, faculty appointments. The Coalition has recently published a survey on the work and working conditions of part-time faculty in colleges and universities. The Professional Matters Division sponsored a panel on this topic at the APA's 1998 Annual Meeting.
