THE ADLER PLANETARIUM – CHICAGO, IL / OXFORD, UNITED KINGDOM
Post-doctoral Researcher in Historical Texts (a full-time temporary position)
The Adler Planetarium, Chicago, IL, in association with the Oxyrhynchus Papyri Project of the University of Oxford, is seeking a post-doctoral researcher in Classics for two years. The successful candidate, who will be based in Oxford for the duration of the post, will work with an international team who are developing online tools to engage a distributed volunteer community in transcribing a large number of papyrus texts written in ancient Greek. The successful applicant will work with Dr. Dirk Obbink in Oxford and the Zooniverse & Galaxy Zoo teams in Oxford and at the Adler and will be expected to begin the scholarly exploitation of the verified transcriptions produced by the project. A doctoral level qualification in a relevant subject alongside knowledge of ancient Greek to a scholarly standard is essential.
The collections of the Oxyrhynchus Papyri project (www.papyrology.ox.ac.uk) are an incredibly rich resource. Previous work to transcribe them en masse relied on image processing techniques which were unable to reliably recover the Greek text. The problem faced in classifying and transcribing large numbers of the papyri, however, is one of pattern recognition, a task to which the human brain is well suited. By using a flexible web-based interface, the job of transcribing can be shared not only with a small number of scholars, but also with a force of volunteers at least 250,000 strong, spread around the globe. The successful candidate would be part of the first large scale application of techniques developed for distributed citizen science to textual analysis and as such will serve as an exemplar of the potential for this technique in the humanities.
The web-based interface, developed by the existing Zooniverse team (www.zooniverse.org) will also provide tutorial instruction and basic testing before users are asked to classify and transcribe documents in graded tiers of difficulty. These tools will make the task of producing an online interface to digitized papyri text much easier, and allow us to access a large database of engaged and interested users from the project’s beginning. Visitors to the site will be asked to classify documents according to types of handwriting, dimensions, and format, and then to identify the location of letters on the papyrus image, before choosing the most appropriate character from a set of examples.
The role of the candidate would be to work with the programming team to ensure that the data produced by the volunteer transcribers is of a suitable level so as to be useful to papyrologists. They would also be expected to take a leading role in using the results of the transcription, both in their own research and in facilitating that of others.
The appointment is grant funded for two years with a start date no earlier than May 1, 2010. Review of applications will begin April 23, 2010 and will continue until the position is filled. Please email a resume including cover letter, list of three references and curriculum vitae to: Marguerite E. Dawson, Director of Human Resources, The Adler Planetarium, 1300 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60605. E-mail address: hr-PostdocResearcher@adlerplanetarium.org. Telephone: 312.322.0591

The American Philological Association invites applications for a one-year Fellowship, tenable from July 2010 through June 2011, which will enable an American scholar to participate in the work of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae Institute in Munich. Fellows at the TLL develop a broadened perspective of the range and complexity of the Latin language and culture from the classical period through the early Middle Ages, contribute signed articles to the Thesaurus, have the opportunity to participate in a collaborative international research project in a collegial environment, and work with senior scholars in the field of Latin lexicography. The Fellowship carries a stipend in the amount of $50,400 and is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The incumbent Fellow may re-apply for a second year, but all applications will be judged on an equal footing.
Applicants must (i) be United States citizens or permanent residents and (ii) already have the Ph.D. or anticipate the award of the degree by July 1, 2010. The opportunity to be trained in lexicography and contribute articles to be published in the lexicon may be of special interest to scholars who are already established in tenure-track positions, as well as those who are just entering the profession. The Fellowship offers valuable experience for scholars in a variety of specialties (e.g., Latin language and literature, Roman law, Roman history, the literature of early Christianity); although it is not limited to individuals working in Latin philology, applicants should possess a thorough familiarity with and a special interest in the Latin language, as well as advanced competence in Greek. It is anticipated that applicants will already have a reading knowledge of German and will be willing to work toward proficiency in spoken German. Women and members of minority groups underrepresented in Classics are particularly encouraged to apply.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a statement of what benefits the applicant expects to derive from the Fellowship for his/her research and teaching, and the names of three referees, whom the applicant should ask to send supporting letters to the Executive Director without further notice. It will be in the candidate’s interest if at least one letter can specifically address the candidate’s suitability for the Fellowship. Candidates will be considered by the APA’s TLL Fellowship Committee, which serves as the selection committee. The committee will choose a short-list of candidates to be invited for interview at the Annual Meeting in January 2010 in Orange County (Anaheim), California, and the name of the successful candidate will be announced shortly thereafter. Applications must be received by the deadline of Monday, November 16, 2009. Applications must be submitted via regular mail or courier. Materials sent via FAX or e-mail will not be accepted.
Applications should be sent to: Dr. Adam D. Blistein, Executive Director, American Philological Association. The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan, expects to make an appointment in Greek literature at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, starting in September 2010. We are particularly looking for someone whose research interests lie in later Greek literature—broadly defined—from the fourth century B.C.E. down to the Second Sophistic and the ancient novel, but we will seriously consider other candidates whose research interests do not duplicate those of the present faculty. We welcome applications both from traditional philologists and from scholars who apply contemporary interpretive methods to literature. Every faculty member normally teaches a mixture of language and classical civilization or Great Books courses each year. The person appointed will share in the teaching rotation for one of the large first-year lecture courses (either Classical Civilization or Great Books) taught every fall term, and also in the rotation for the graduate survey of Greek Literature (taught in alternate years). Other teaching responsibilities will include Greek courses, especially Hellenistic poetry and Greek literature of the Roman period, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Courses may also be organized around themes or genres. We hope that the candidate will also sometimes teach the required graduate course in Greek Prose Composition.
The Ph.D. must be completed by August 2009, but preference will be given to candidates whose dissertations are complete at the time of application. Please send a dossier including a letter of application, at least three letters of recommendation, current C.V., evidence of teaching experience, a statement of current and future research plans, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and a writing sample to the Greek Search Committee, Department of Classical Studies, University of Michigan, 2160 Angell Hall, 435 S.
