AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME ----- ROME, ITALY
Andrew W. Mellon Professor-in-Charge of the School of Classical Studies 1999-2002. American Academy in Rome seeks a distinguished scholar to serve as Andrew W. Mellon Professor-in-Charge of the school of Classical Studies for an initial term of three years beginning September 1999. Candidates should have extensive experience in one or more of the following areas of ancient Roman studies: archaeology, art, history, literature, epigraphy and topography. In addition, s/he must be able to demonstrate an ability to help advance the work of the Rome Prize Fellows, as well as mange archaeology, publications and other programs. Salary and benefits are negotiable and will be competitive. The Mellon Professor, who reports to the Director in Rome, should have a thorough familiarity with the sites and monuments of Rome and Italy, a good speaking knowledge of Italian, familiarity with classical languages, broad intellectual interests and appropriate personal qualities, as well as organizational and administrative skills. S/he will be part of a senior program team that is responsible for the life of the residential community and the design and execution of the annual program in the humanities and the arts. The American Philological Association seeks to hire a full-time administrator with a background in Classics. The successful candidate will become Executive Director-designate on or about 1 May 1999, and will assume full duties on 1 July 1999. The anticipated term of office is five years with an annual review and the potential for renewal. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience. The Association expects to maintain its current offices on the campus of New York University, but is willing to consider proposals to locate the office elsewhere.

 

The Executive Director is the chief operating officer of the Association, reporting to the Board of Directors, working closely with, and actively assisting, the President and the Vice-Presidents of the Divisions (Education, Professional Matters, Program, Publications, Research). The Executive Director fosters communication and a spirit of cooperation with the various constituencies of the Association, as well as with individual members; represents the Association to the Conference of Administrative Officers of the American Council of Learned Societies; and serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees of Scholars Press. Current duties of the Executive Director include:

  • Providing continuity in leadership and policy formation for the Association;
  • Managing the Association's finances and overseeing its business incompliance with the policies and by-laws of the organization;
  • Supervising on a day-to-day basis the office staff, and carrying out the Association's activities, including office publications (Newsletter, Graduate Guide, Annual Meeting Program, etc.); managing the annual meeting in coordination with the Archaeological Institute of America; and overseeing the Placement Service.The Executive Director will play a major role in fund-raising and developing new initiatives for the Association; will continue to develop the Association's contacts with professional organizations in other academic disciplines and with groups involved in teaching Latin and Greek in the schools; and will bring our own disciplines to the attention of appropriate government bodies, philanthropic institutions, and the public at large. The holder of the position, which calls for a combination of academic, diplomatic, and managerial skills, will have considerable influence on the future development of the Association, and of our entire profession. Classical Studies. Department of Classics seeks to appoint a Hellenist for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor or instructor level, beginning the fall of 1999. Applicants should have broad training in both Greek and Latin languages and literatures, and a scholarly specialization in Greek literature, preferably Homer and/or Greek drama. The teaching load is five courses per year; the successful candidate will likely teach elementary Greek every year, and a wide range of Greek and Latin texts at the intermediate or advanced undergraduate level. At least one course each year will be on a topic in translation, developed to complement departmental offerings, ideally from an interdisciplinary perspective. Possible topics might include: the role of performance in the ancient world; ancient theater; gender in the ancient world; the world of epic and tragedy. Blegen Fellow Position, 1999-2000

The Vassar College Department of Classics invites applications for the Blegen Research Fellowship in 1999-2000, which is intended for a scholar who requires a year of reduced teaching responsibility to develop or bring to fruition a major project in a specified area of research. The fellowship is tenable for one year by a scholar who has taught full-time at a college or university for at least three years and holds the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (or its equivalent). For the 1999-2000 academic year we invite applications from scholars involved in the study of classical culture from the high empire through late antiquity (c. 100-500 CE), particularly in the areas of religion or the literary genre of fiction. In addition to pursuing his or her research, the Blegen Fellow will teach two courses. One, of the Fellow's own devising, should be taught at the introductory level on a subject of interest to the general student body and related to the Fellow's research interests. In addition to this course, the Fellow will teach a course from the regular curriculum selected by the department according to need. For this purpose, the applicant must be able to teach an intermediate to advanced-level course in Greek or Latin involving close reading of texts. It is also hoped that the Fellow will contribute to the intellectual life of the department and college in other less formal ways. The fellowship carries a stipend appropriate to experience, plus benefits, and the use, without cost, of a large, furnished two-bedroom apartment (including utilities).
