University of Rochester -- Rochester, NY
CLASSICS/MEDITERRANEAN RELIGIONS AND CULTURES/ANCIENT HISTORY. The Department of Religion and Classics at the University of Rochester seeks to appoint a senior lecturer in Classics. Candidates should be prepared to teach three undergraduate courses per semester in the Classics program, which will include Latin at all levels, some Classical and New Testament Greek, and several culture courses including Roman religion. Additional responsibilities will include advising majors, working with the undergraduate teaching fellows, and directing independent studies. An essential aspect of this position is program development, and the senior lecturer would be expected to explore and experiment with models for coordinating small upper-level language offerings with other larger upper-level courses in English, in order to make the content of each semester's language courses better able to support and enrich the overall Religion and Classics programs. Further, the senior lecturer would play a key role in the Department's plans to develop a new Classics concentration enhanced by certification in the teaching of Latin at the University of Rochester's Warner School of Education. Establishing such a collaborative program may demand extensive time and energy, in which case the lecturer will qualify for a one-course teaching reduction per year.

The position is non-tenure track, with an initial appointment of three to five years, with the possibility of renewal. There will be annual performance and programmatic reviews. Given the teaching and development demands, the senior lecturer would not be required to publish original scholarship, though s/he will have the time and congenial atmosphere for pursuing relevant projects in pedagogy or research.

Proven excellence in teaching and a completed Ph.D. are desirable. Preferred research specialties are Latin language and literature, Greek and Roman religions, classical archaeology, or Greco-Roman history and civilization, as these will complement the mission of the Department to connect the study of religions with the languages in which they came to expression and the cultures and civilizations from which they emerged. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Send full dossier, including writing samples and letters of recommendation, by December 15, 1999, to: Classics Search, Department of Religion & Classics, 430 Rush Rhees Library, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY 14627; (716) 275-5378. An Equal Opportunity Employer.
