American Numismatic Society – NEW YORK, NY
Margaret Thompson Curator of Greek Coins.  The American Numismatic Society is seeking to fill a position of a second Margaret Thompson Curator of Greek Coins. The Society hopes to recruit an energetic and creative curator to oversee its collections of Greek and Roman Provincial coins as well as other parts of the collection.  The successful individual is expected to work with Dr. Peter van Alfen, Margaret Thompson Associate Curator of Greek Coins and the other curatorial staff.   S/he will have to be prepared to work on parts of the collection outside the ancient field.  The successful candidate is expected to work on the ANS’s exhibition program, contribute to the ANS Magazine, and do research in his or her own chosen field. All ANS curators are expected to participate actively in the Society's development, outreach and public relations initiatives. Curators also provide instruction in Classical numismatics at the ANS Graduate Seminar and elsewhere.

The Curator should hold or be about to finish a Ph.D. or have equivalent qualifications in a related field, such as history, art history, or archaeology. The Curator should also be proficient in other foreign languages, including ancient Greek, and two modern languages.  The Curator is expected to be or become a recognized expert in his/her field, through study, research, writing, and publication on coinage, the ancient world and other fields. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Librarian of the Blegen Library. Founded in 1881, the ASCSA is a primary resource for American and international graduate students and scholars in ancient and post-classical Hellenic studies, and offers two research libraries located on its campus in Athens, Greece: the Blegen, with 88,000 volumes dedicated to the ancient Mediterranean world, and the Gennadius, with 110,500 volumes and archives devoted to post-classical Hellenic civilization. The School also sponsors excavations and provides centers for advanced research in archaeological and related topics at its excavations in the Athenian Agora and Corinth.

The primary responsibility of the Associate Librarian is the maintenance and development of the Blegen Library's catalogue which is being developed on-line using Ex Libris' Aleph in conjunction with the Gennadius and the library of the British School at Athens. The Associate Librarian will be the lead cataloguer for the Blegen Library.

(Three Positions)

POSITION ONE: Malcolm H. Wiener Visiting Research Professor at the Wiener Laboratory of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Term: Early September to June 1, to coincide with the American School's academic year. It is expected that the applicant will maintain a physical presence at the Wiener Laboratory.

Compensation: Maximum $35,000 for ten-month project. (Projects of shorter duration may be considered).

Qualifications: Postdoctoral scholars and professionals in fields relevant to the research interests of the Wiener Laboratory of the American School, including: physical anthropology, zooarchaeology, geoarchaeology and environmental sciences.

  2. Statement (up to 3,500 words) of the proposed research project to be completed during the term of the professorship, including research goals, explicit methodology to be used and relevant bibliography, materials and collections to be studied, timetable and publication schedule, equipment/resources needed while at the Wiener Laboratory, and the reasons the project should occur in Athens at the Wiener Laboratory.

Up until now, BCP has focused on providing texts to prepare students to acquire the ability to read classical authors in the original.  Recently, we have been focusing on new pedagogy and content. Now, in addition, we have started to focus on providing material for students who are more interested in taking humanities for personal growth and language skills for daily life.

The coordinating editor would be a part of a team that will have considerable influence on the development of classical textbooks and scholarship.

The Department of Classical Studies at Brandeis University announces an opening for Fall 2006 to teach one course, the second half of elementary Greek (Greek 20 in our curriculum). The course meets Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on the Brandeis campus.

While the prospective candidate should be prepared to inspire students about the subjunctive mood, irregular verbs, and the linguistic intricacies embedded in ancient Greek, we would be delighted to find, in addition, someone equally passionate about ancient Greek life, literature or history. Greek 20 is, after all, the gateway to further study in Greek language, literature, and civilization. The course involves reading excerpts from a variety of Greek authors across a wide range of time. The textbook is Hansen and Quinn.

The candidate should be either an ABD or a Ph.D., preferably in Greek language and literature, although candidates in related fields of Classical Studies with demonstrated excellence in ancient Greek are also invited to apply.

Following the appointment of Professor Edith Hall, Leverhulme Professor of Greek Cultural History, to a research chair in London from July 2006, the Department wishes to appoint a replacement in the broad area of Greek Cultural History: see further below. (This appointment is made possible by a generous, ten-year grant from The Leverhulme Trust which will run until 2011; the post itself is permanent.) The Department also wishes to make a further professorial appointment in anticipation of the retirement, within the next four years, of one of its other senior members. 1) Margo Tytus Visiting Scholars Program-The University of Cincinnati Classics Department is pleased to announce the Margo Tytus Visiting Scholars Program. Tytus Fellows, in the fields of philology, history and archaeology will ordinarily be at least 5 years beyond receipt of the Ph. D.  Apart from residence in Cincinnati during term, the only obligation of Tytus Fellows is to pursue their own research.   Fellowships are tenable during the regular academic year (October 1 to June 10).

There are two categories of Tytus Fellowships, long-term and short-term.  Long Term Fellows will come to Cincinnati for a minimum of one academic quarter (two and a half months) and a maximum of three during the regular academic year.  They will receive a monthly stipend of $1000 plus housing and a transportation allowance.  Short Term Fellows will come to Cincinnati for a minimum of one month and a maximum of two during the regular academic year. The Crake Doctoral Fellowship. The Crake Foundation and the Department of Classics at Mount Allison University are pleased to announce the Crake Doctoral Fellowship in Classics for the academic year 2006-2007.

The Crake Fellowship is non-renewable, open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who at the time of taking up the fellowship have completed all course and residential requirements for the Doctorate in Classics, passed all preliminary examinations and completed the research for the thesis, and who can reasonably be expected to finish the doctorate during the year of the fellowship.

The holder will be asked to teach one course in each of the Fall and Winter terms, give a public lecture, and be in Sackville from September to the end of April.

In 2006-2007 the holder of the Crake Fellowship will receive $21,000, with an allowance of up to $3,500 to cover moving and other research-associated expenses.
