State Certification Requirements for Teachers of Latin

Certification Terminology

Regular certification with an endorsement in Latin

Provisional certification (see note)

Grade Level of Certification:

Determined by type of teacher preparation program completed

Degree Requirement:

B.A.

Subject Matter Requirements:

There is no set number of credits, but completion of an approved Latin education program is required for a permanent endorsement in Latin.

Professional Training in Education Required:

Yes

Subject Test:

No designated Latin subject test, but all applicants for licensure must pass the Praxis I, Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST).

 

Note:

State law requires all licensed teachers to complete approved programs in Human Relations Training and Special Education Training. Applicants who have not yet completed these requirements or the Praxis I Test are eligible for provisional certification.

Additional Requirements for Advanced Certification:

A Professional Teaching Certificate requires a master’s degree in Latin or

in Curriculum and Instruction. This license is valid for 10 years.
