State Certification Requirements for Teachers of Latin

Alabama

Certification Terminology:

9-12

Degree Requirement:

B.A.

Subject Matter Requirements:

Latin major

Professional Training in Education Required:

Yes

Subject Test:

Praxis II: Latin

Additional Requirements for Advanced Certification:

  1. A valid Class B Professional Educator Certificate, Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate, Special Alternative Certificate, or Preliminary Certificate and a passing grade on an Alabama-approved subject-specific test.
    OR
  2. A master’s degree.
    OR
  3. Thirty-two (32) semester hours in Latin, with at least 19 upper division hours.
    OR
  4. A Class A or Class AA Professional Educator Certificate endorsed in subject taught.
    OR
  5. A Class A or Class AA certification in an area closely related to Latin and has 10 or more years of full-time teaching experience in the teacher’s assignment area.
    OR
  6. Has 5 years of full-time teaching experience and holds a valid National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certificate.
