IMPORTANT NOTE: What is the Importance of Booking at our Official Annual Meeting Hotels?
The AIA and APA are financially able to hold the Annual Meeting by reserving a large block of guest rooms within a hotel or hotels. In exchange, these hotels offer our attendees the guaranteed lowest group rate at that hotel and provide us with complimentary meeting space. But if we are unable to meet our guaranteed minimum number of registered guests, the AIA and APA will have to pay for the unused rooms as well as room rental for the meeting space, which would amount to a severe financial penalty. We request your support by booking within our reserved blocks and appreciate your cooperation.
SEMINARS
ANNOUNCEMENT OF SEMINARS at 2011 ANNUAL MEETING
The Program Committee has approved two proposals to offer seminars at the 2011 Annual Meeting in San Antonio. Full details of these sessions appear below. Seminars are intended to provide an opportunity for extensive discussion of the papers to be presented. To this end attendance at the seminars will be limited, and the speakers in these sessions have been asked to make their papers available by November so that registrants who attend the sessions can read them in advance. Each will present only a brief summary of his or her paper at the session itself.
To ensure the success of these sessions, the Program Committee requests the following commitments from annual meeting registrants interested in attending a seminar.
- Ask the Seminar Leader via e-mail to reserve a place for you at the session. The organizer's e-mail address follows his name in the descriptions below.
- Read each of the seminar papers in advance of the meeting. Registrants whose requests to participate are accepted will receive copies of the seminar papers after November 15, 2010.
- Attend the entire 3-hour session in San Antonio. The Program Committee feels strongly that the success of the seminars will depend in large part on the willingness of all participants to participate actively for the entire session. In addition, persons accepted for attendance at a seminar may be taking the place of another registrant who wished to attend the session. There will be a brief break scheduled about halfway through each session.
Below is the list of speakers and topics for the seminars as well as a brief summary of the session prepared by the organizers:
Friday, January 7, 2011, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Allusion and Intertextuality in Classical Historiography
Organizer: John Marincola, jmarinco@fsu.edu
Although studies of ancient historians based on notions of allusion and intertextuality are quite common nowadays, scholars have only just begun to examine to what extent historiographical studies of allusion and intertextuality – approaches which were developed for and initially employed in non-historical and indeed non-prose texts – need to be modified or differently focused. The papers in this seminar address the theoretical issues surrounding intertextuality and historiographical texts, in the hopes of stimulating discussion on whether and/or to what extent we need to think differently when considering works that claim (or that we think claim) to have some relationship to the real world of history.
- David Levene, New York University, "Historical Allusion and the Nature of the Historical Text"
- Christopher Pelling, University of Oxford, "Intertextuality, Plausibility, and Interpretation"
- John Marincola, Florida State University, "Intertextuality and Exempla"
- Ayelet Haimson Lushkov, The University of Texas at Austin, "Citation and the Dynamics of Tradition in Livy’s AUC"
- Respondent: T. P. Wiseman, University of Exeter
Saturday, January 8, 2011, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
The Audience of Roman Comedy
Organizer: Timothy J. Moore, timmoore@mail.utexas.edu
Roman comedy’s audience has long been of interest to scholars, but it has become the subject of especially acute discussion in the last few years. Some recent works have argued that the audience included members from all levels of Roman society, others that the plays were directed only at the elite. The issues at stake are both social and literary and force us to evaluate the relationship between text- and material-based approaches to drama. This seminar offers four very different responses to evidence from both within and outside of Plautus’ and Terence’s plays.
- Michael Fontaine, Cornell University, "Who's Out There? History, Irony, and Jokes as Evidence for the Composition of Plautus' Audience"
- Amy Richlin, University of California, Los Angeles, "Talking to Slaves in the Plautine Audience"
- C. W. Marshall, The University of British Columbia, "Livy’s Census Data and Death in the Hannibalic War: A Note on Plautine Audiences"
- Sander M. Goldberg, University of California, Los Angeles, "Terence and the populi studium"

LOCAL INFORMATION
SAN ANTONIO HIGHLIGHTS
San Antonio’s River Walk, Spanish colonial architecture, and fountain-laden parks and plazas make it one of America’s most picturesque cities. Today, this seventeenth-century metropolis is the seventh largest city in the nation with contemporary venues and lavish accommodations, all while maintaining an old world heritage exuded through diverse artistry, ethnic cuisine and an intimate and exquisite culture. Below are just a few highlights of what San Antonio has to offer its visitors; for extensive information on all things San Antonio-related, please visit the microsite built especially for the Joint Annual Meeting.
The River Walk (Paseo del Rio): Millions of people visit the River Walk each year to enjoy this unusual urban sanctuary that winds along the San Antonio River in central San Antonio, one story below the bustling street level. The Annual Meeting hotels sit along the Riverwalk and offer easy access to the restaurants, galleries and shops that line its banks. More information, downloadable maps, and coupons are available on the above website.
The Alamo: A short walk from the Marriotts, Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) was established in 1718 as the city's first mission and is famous for being the location where a small band of Texans held out for thirteen days against the Centralist army of General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The chapel, one of the most photographed facades in the nation, and the Long Barracks are all that remain of the original fort. The Long Barracks Museum and Library is located near the chapel. The museum contains relics and mementos from the Republic of Texas and offers a narration on the fall of the Alamo. The Alamo is located in the heart of the city, inside beautifully landscaped grounds.
The San Antonio Museum of Art : Home to exceptionally important permanent collections of Western Antiquities, Asian Art, Latin American Art, and contemporary American paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts, SAMA is host of a special exhibition, To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum, through January 9, 2011. Visit SAMA’s website for more information on SAMA, its collections, and its exhibitions.
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park : In the 18th century, the Spanish church established five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River, primarily to extend its dominion northward from Mexico, but also to convert the native population. What remains of the largest concentration of missions in North America provides an interesting look into Texas' history. Today's Mission Trail links four of the missions: San José, Concepción, San Juan, and Espada with its nearby aqueduct.
The Market Square/El Mercado : The largest Mexican marketplace outside of Mexico, El Mercado offers delightful experiences of bargain-hunting and unique shopping. Just across the way, the eateries and shops of Farmers Market Plaza combine the cultural, artistic and ethnic influences of the Southwest and south of the border. The square is alive with family-owned cafes, shops, and live music.
Tower of the Americas : For more than 35 years, the 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas has offered residents and tourists of San Antonio the most breathtaking view of the Alamo City. Visitors can dine at the Tower's revolving restaurant, enjoy the Texas-themed 4-D, multi-sensory theater or view the scenery from the observation deck.
San Antonio Zoo: The San Antonio Zoo is ranked as one of the best zoos in the nation, exhibiting over 3,500 animals of 600 species. Located at the headwaters of the San Antonio River, the Zoo encompasses 35 landscaped acres and is the third largest zoo in the U.S. The zoo is open 365 days a year.
King William District: King William is the oldest historic district in Texas. Built by German merchants in the late 1800s, it is made up of elegant mansions, quirky bed and breakfasts, art galleries, restaurants and the Southtown commercial corridor. Its tree-lined streets sweep the south bank of the San Antonio River; on its edges are the Blue Star and Lavaca neighborhoods. You can pick up a self-guided walking tour from the San Antonio Conservation Society.
Athens v. Sparta, a musical version of Thucydides' and Xenophon's histories of the Peloponnesian War, will be performed on January 8 at a venue near the meeting hotels.
GETTING AROUND SAN ANTONIO
On foot: Countless restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions are within easy walking distance of the Annual Meeting hotels.
By Streetcar: Downtown travel is a breeze on the streetcar, an open air, authentic reproduction of a rail streetcar which traveled the streets of San Antonio more than 50 years ago. The streetcars run from early morning until late at evening, and there’s one along about every 10 minutes at stops located throughout downtown. For more information, visit .
By bus: The Sightseer Special (Bus 7) runs daily among the city's favorite sites. You can see them all for one price. Locations visited by the Sightseer Special include the River Walk Streetcar Station, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Alamo, San Antonio Museum of Art, Japanese Tea Garden, Brackenridge Park, San Antonio Zoo, Trinity University, University of the Incarnate Word, Witte Museum and San Antonio Botanical Garden.
WEATHER
In January, San Antonio’s daily average temperatures are a high of 62 degrees and a low of 42 degrees. January is also one of the city’s driest months with an average monthly rainfall of just 1.66 inches.

This year’s CAMP production, to be held Friday evening, January 7, 2011, at 7:30pm, will feature a dramatic reading of Aristophanes’ Thesmophoriazousai, as translated, adapted and directed by Bella Vivante. This is a racy adaptation that aims to reflect the spirit and intent of Aristophanes’ play but rendered in a modern idiom for a contemporary audience. Like all previous CAMP productions, this one will feature Classics faculty and students from across the country as the performers, who are chomping at the bit and prepared to entertain APA-AIA conference-goers with this lively, comedic romp. Come enjoy the pratfalls, slapstick, stock jokes about chicks, dudes, sex, and drinking, singing, dancing, celebrity impressions, cinematic parodies, good schticks, bad puns, and more! In keeping with the Old Comedy features of this play within the constraints of modern society, this performance is for Mature Audiences only.

The Fair is free with purchase of museum admission.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 8

The Roundtable Discussions have continued to be well attended, and together with the AIA, the APA Program Committee is pleased to present new topics this year at midday (11:30am to 1:00pm). Members of both societies will lead separate discussions at individual tables. Topics will include issues of intellectual and practical importance to classicists and archaeologists. Sign-up sheets will be available in advance of the session so that participation at each table can be limited to a number that will encourage useful dialogues.
APA Plenary Session. The Board of Directors is pleased to announce changes in the format for this year’s Plenary Session that are intended both to reduce the amount of time needed for award ceremonies and to encourage more members to attend.
